We got it right . . . We have received several uncomplimentary and uninformed e-mails and phone calls regarding our decision to cancel Sunday play at the St. Patrick's Day Slugfest. Many of the complaints are from parents who did not have first hand knowledge of the field conditions on Sunday. We made the right call. We had 1.25 inches of rain in the area overnight on Saturday. The fields were flooded. No amount of drying agent would have revived them not to mention the fact that the sun did not come out until midday. We made a bold and undeniably correct decision to call it Saturday night. Because we called it Saturday night out of state teams were able to return home at a decent hour. Area teams driving on hour or two each way were spared a wasted trip. We got it right and the coaches and officials who visited the fields absolutely agreed as you can see below. .... from the Pittsburgh Wildthings I visited the fields on Sunday and can vouch for the fact that the tournament organizers made the right decision to cancel. The fields were a swamp. It must have rained steadily overnight and because the weather has been very wet down there this Winter there seemed to be nowhere for the water to go. Better that they cancelled in the a.m. than at 3:00 or 4:00 p.m. That's exactly what would have happened had they waited. H.B. Mertz .... from the Jersey Shore Thunderbirds I went to the fields and you made the right decision. Henry Rinkewich ....from the Philadelphia Senators We had no problem with it. Steve Koplove ....from the Director of Parks and Rec in Henrico County As the athletic director for Henrico County Recreation and Parks and coach of the 13U Hanover Generals I respect the decision you had to make and agree with you that it was the right decision. Andrew M. Crane Sports Supervisor ....from the Powhatan Warriors Good call. Anthony Abel ....from the Midlothian Diamond Miners For what it's worth the Super Regional AAU event in Norfolk cancelled all games today as well. I fully support your decision. Joe White ....from the Virginia USSSA State Director The Petersburg/Prince George area received 1 1/2 inches of rain Saturday night on fields that were already wet from snow/rain Wednesday & Thursday. I went to the complex & all the fields in Prince George all had large amounts of standing water and mud. The sun did come out until around 11:00AM Sunday. There was no way to get fields playable. I was there and agree with the decision to cancel the event. Many of the teams had long distances to travel and needed an early decision. Rick Brockwell Virginia USSSA State Director
